Homemade Yogurt From Scratch: Healthy Smart Kids in the Kitchen
 
 
This is a recipe for homemade yogurt. There are many good quality yogurts on the market, but for an added experience for your child--try making this homemade yogurt.

  • Ingredients
  • 1-quart whole milk (use non-homogenized milk only)
  • ½ cup plain yogurt. This should be high-quality yogurt
  • Candy thermometer
Instructions
  1. Heat the milk to 180 degrees (use a candy thermometer)
  2. Cool the milk to 110 degrees (use a candy thermometer)
  3. When the milk has cooled to 110 degrees, stir in the ½ cup yogurt
  4. Pour in a glass, enamel, or stainless steel container (or use a yogurt maker)
  5. Cover the container and place it in a warm oven: 150 degrees; overnight
  6. In the morning, transfer the mixture to the refrigerator
  7. Use paper towels to remove any whey that comes out of the yogurt
  8. The end result will probably be thinner than most store-bought yogurts
