My great-grandmother made these Buttermilk Biscuits for her family and the Piute Indians who taught her how to forage

Serves: 1 dozen
Ingredients
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • ½ cup butter (or one stick)
  • ⅔ cup + 2 Tablespoons buttermilk
Instructions
  1. Sift all the dry ingredients together for even distribution
  2. Using a pastry blender, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until they resemble coarse crumbs
  3. Add the buttermilk
  4. Mix and gently knead until the dough forms a ball (for taller biscuits)
  5. Roll out, and cut with a round cookie cutter
  6. Place on an ungreased baking sheet
  7. Bake at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes
